Nest Box Installation
Nest Boxes to Support Queensland's Wildlife
Why provide Nest Boxes?
We believe our native fauna deserves a safe place to call home. To suport thier habitat options, it is sometimes necessary to create habitat homes when their traditional habitat options are limited, as a result of bushfires or urban development attributing to tree removal and therefore habitat loss. That's why at South East Elevation, we offer a comprehensive nest box service designed to support our wildlife and in turn, enriching everyone's environment.
From our intitial free inspection service, through to the supply, installation, maintenance and our monitioring/data collection service, we provide a comprehensive, safe, and effective ongoing service to our customers (and our wildlife friends).
Expert Guidance
Our team at South East Elevation is guided by ecologists and our experience in habitat nest box installations, ensuring your chosen nest boxes are placed in optimal locations from the safety of our EWP basket. We'll attend the site initially to discover appropriate tree species and positions to place the boxes in order to attract your target species.
Tailored Solutions
We understand that our unique fauna has unique habitat needs. That's why we offer customized nest box designs to suit your specific wildlife goals. From size and shape to entry hole dimensions, we'll provide the perfect option whether it be for your own backyard, or for larger programs including offset programs where multiple box installations are required.
Safe and Secure Installation
Safety is our top priority. Our skilled technicians hold high risk work licenses enabling them to work safely at heights, and they use specialised equipment to safely install your nest boxes at the ideal height in trees (up to 18 metres), We will ensure they are securely attached to the trees with preferred methods which avoid damage to the tree itself, and ensure the boxes are positioned well and ready to welcome their new residents.
Monitoring and Data Collection
At South East Elevation, we are dedicated to following up after installation to check on your targeted species's new home, and to ensure it stays in good condition for years to come. Our ongoing monitoring and maintenance service involves quarterly or half yearly inspections by a fauna spotter, and includes data collection if required. The installation of cameras is an additional service we offer in certain situations. Monitoring and ongoing maintenance of the boxes, ensures that responsibility is upheld for keeping the boxes in good condition for the wellbeing of our fauna inhabiting them.
The link below contains great information from the Ipswich Shire Council and has some important points to consider when considering the installation of Nest Boxes in your community.
Step 1
Site Selection
When deciding on a site to install nest boxes, an overall understanding of the environment and species which inhabit the area needs to be considered, along with any future development to the area which may occur. A Nest Box install is a long term project which needs to be undertaken responsibly. Knowledge of whether the site is suitable for Nest Boxes and particular species can be sort from an Ecologist or your local Council. Once the site has been deemed suitable for installation, contact South East Elevation and we can provide you or your company with a free onsite quote to supply and install your new nest box and discuss the individual trees which we suggest will support the box well for years to come.Step 2
Nest Box & Species Selection
Decide upon the species of fauna you want to provide additional habitat for, and select a nest box which provides a suitable habitat option designed specifically for your target species. South East Elevation can assist you in suggesting the perfect habitat option for your target species whether this be for Gliders, Micro Bats, Owls, Possums or Parrots. Each species will have preferred or necessary habitat requirements to consider before going ahead with a nest box purchase.Step 3
Tree Selection
Choose indigenous native trees which support food offerings for your target species, so they will be likely to remain close to the safety of their habitat when seeking food. Consider connectability with a good canopy structure above, offering protection from the harsh western sun, and a safe option for gliders to move safely from tree to tree, away from ground dwelling preditors. The height of the tree and ability to locate a good point to fix the box to, is important to consider also.Step 4
Species Monitoring & Data Collection
An important responsibility of installing nest boxes is to ensure that they are monitored regularly for their effectiveness. South East Elevation provides a fauna spotter catcher service who will carefully collect the data you need to make informed decisions regarding the nest box, and at times remove unwanted pest species from the boxes if necessary. This important data will be collected electronically through Survey apps such as Survey123 designed specifically for nest box installation and monitoring.Step 5
Ongoing Maintenance
Boxes will require painting at times when becomming weathered to ensure that the box does not deteriorate and maintains it's ongoing integrity. Ensuring boxes are secured at all times is a safety issue for our wildlife, and also to pedestrians walking underneath them. Maintenance can be done at the same time as regular monitoring and data collection making it cost effective for customers to retain our services.
We are based on the Sunshine Coast; however, we service Australia Wide and are available for long-term Mining & Civil Projects (subject to availability, travel & accomodation).
